For more than 50 years Italian bathroom brand Agape has led the way in the evolution of the bathroom, playing a paradigm-shifting role in evolving the bathroom forward, from a purely functional space into a centre for relaxation and wellbeing.
Emanuele Benedini, co-founder of Agape, has been deeply involved in many of the innovations that saw Agape present new propositions for the bathroom, and forever change the role of this most intimate and essential space in everyday life.

In this interview Emanuele speaks with Artedomus’ managing director, Phil Brenton, from Agape’s home base in Mantova, Italy. He recounts the milestones that have led Agape to where it is today; the collaborations behind their most recognised bathroom collections; and the qualities inherent in designs that transcend trends to become ‘long sellers’.
In the very beginning, Agape was “the first to make modular furniture for bathrooms”, explains Emanuele. Agape also produced accessories and freestanding and wall mounted washbasins – the latter raised Agape’s profile as a global leader in bathroom design.

Many of Agape’s products have marked significant typological changes in the bathroom, says Emanuele. From the first curved wooden washbasin, ‘Gabbiano’, designed as a single top with undulating surface that follows the flowing of water; to the ‘Spoon’ bathtub by Benedini Associati, which he describes as ‘soft and lively’ in its shape – like sculpture for the bathroom. Mangiarotti’s Bjhon washbasins, and 1970s design that remains just as relevant today; as does Patricia Urquiola’s Vieques Bath – a custom design for the W Hotel on Vieques Island, which has become a pillar of Agape’s bathtub range.
“The role of the bathroom has changed a lot,” reflects Emanuele. Evolving from a functional space purely used for washing, into a place where we can also relax. It’s now a space that requires more functions to support both bathing and relaxation. In the future Emanuele expects to see bathroom spaces become larger, more dedicated to self-care, and expanding into outdoor bathing environments.

Reflecting on Agape’s collection and the continued popularity of its category-defining products, Emanuele confirms Agape’s very considered approach towards product development and the enduring originality and freshness of its designs. “I don’t think there is such a strong need to constantly evolve products and home environments,” says Emanuele, “because once you have comfort and products with durability [product quality and aesthetics], the concept of trends… is no longer as relevant. Because when you create something right, a good product, there’s no need to [create] new things for the sake of it.”
